AGE GROUPS

Students are divided into various classes based on their School Year

​

Occasionally students may be reshuffled after assessment by 

their teachers. 

​

In 2025 our age groups will be as follows:

​

TINY TOTS – Pre School
JUNIOR – Kindy, years 1 and 2

INTERMEDIATE - Years 3, 4, 5
PRE SENIOR – Years 6, 7 and 8
SENIOR – Years 9+
ADULT - Mature Age Students

STYLES

All Age Groups

Jazz

Jazz is one of dance’s most popular styles. Classes combine an aerobic and stretch warm-up, followed by centre and corner work technique and movement progressions.

​

Students will learn coordination, balance, kinaesthetic awareness and well as develop their confidence. Jazz class is lots of fun where students learn kicks, turns, jumps, leaps as well as body isolations and movement combinations.

​

Stratosphere Performing Arts teachers aim to create lessons full of energy and variety where students learn both modern and traditional jazz techniques and styles.

​

The studio offers B.A.L. Jazz Syllabus classwork for students who wish to refine their Jazz technique. Please see the below class description for more information.

Junior to Advanced Age Groups

Lyrical / Contemporary

Lyrical / Contemporary dance is an eclectic movement expression which borrows from ballet, jazz, abstract and modern dance. Students are taught to dance with intent and purpose, engaging with the style and meaning of both class work in performance.

​

Lyrical / Contemporary dance develops young students performance maturity and exposes them to movements which are unique to this dance style. The discipline of contemporary dance is taught wide and varied. At Stratosphere Performing Arts teachers focus on teaching self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, technique, jumps, tumbles, floor work and progressive movement.

This class is offered to Junior aged students and above (Intermediate to Open Age Divisions). Please see class timetable for detailed class times.

Junior to Advanced Age Groups

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre classes at Stratosphere PA incorporate dance, drama and singing in one fun and animated lesson. Students learn characterisation and professional stagecraft whilst developing an understanding and appreciation of traditional and modern musicals.

 

This class is perfect for dancers who want to work on their acting and singing skills and is a wonderful class to help to extend our students' confidence and performance maturity.

All Age Groups

Tap

Tap is one of our energetic (and noisy!) classes on our timetable. Students are taught leg/foot coordination to execute beats performed to various types of music.

​

Special attention is given to teaching students timing, rhythm and syncopation.

​

Stratosphere Performing Arts aims to give our students a well rounded tuition in both traditional and modern styles of tap dancing.

The studio uses Tap & Beats and B.A.L. Tap Syllabi for their class work.

​

Students are given the opportunity to take part in annual examinations for their Tap Grades. Please speak to Miss Kate for more information.

Junior to Advanced Age Groups

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is one of Stratosphere Performing Arts’ most fun-filled and vibrant classes. Hip Hop is an ever-evolving style which adapts to popular music and trends of the day.

​

The style itself is a fusion of jazz, urban and breakdance movement focusing on body conditioning, movement progressions, isolations, freezes/balances, body fluidity and endurance. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up to more elaborate dance routines.

​

Hip Hop class is offered to Junior aged students and above. Please see class timetable for detailed class times.

​

Stratosphere Performing Arts regularly hosts industry performers and choreographers to guest our classes to inspire and expose our students to different hip hop styles.

Junior to Advanced Age Groups

Technique

Our Superstar Technique classes are for keen dancers want to develop their foundational dance technique. In these lessons dancers will rotate between weekly lesson focuses, breaking down technical elements of dance and working towards performance goals. Lesson focuses will include: 

- Kicks / Mounts

- Turns 

- Flexibility 

- Contemporary Floor Work

- Movement Progressions

Classical Ballet

Classical Ballet is one of Stratosphere Performing Arts most structured classes. Students will learn and follow the B.A.L. syllabus focusing on learning and perfect correct ballet technique, movement progression and body alignment.

​

Ballet is the foundation of all dance work and is perhaps the most important class for any aspiring performer. Students focus on movements including adage, allegro, balance, turns as well as body awareness, strength and flexibility.

​

Stratosphere Performing Arts offers Ballet to all ages, Beginners right through to Senior Major Syllabus Grades.

Graded Classes

Acrobatics

Acrobatics is a form of gymnastics that focuses on floor skills. It involves individual, partner and group work combined with aerial and rotational elements.

 

Stratosphere Performing Arts provides the opportunity for its students to learn both basic and advanced acrobatics that can be incorporated into dance routines.

​

Students are instructed in the fundamental movement skills of gymnastics including key body positions, Jumps, leaps, rolls, handstands, cartwheels, walk over’s etc. Correct technique is the main focus in these skills as they form the basis for more advanced acrobatics, partner and group work including pyramids, partner balances and cartwheels, round offs, back flips, handsprings, aerials and somersaults.

​

Our acrobatics classes are open age however they are graded (Star Level 1-4) to cater for all abilities and skill levels using the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus for our lessons.

Junior to Advanced Age Groups

Aerial Silks

Hung from a Swivel, Figure 8 and 2 carabiners off a 3.4m high rig, a specially designed fabric is secured and drapes down with 2 tails. With special training, students can use the silks to hang from, create shapes and even drop from heights!

Junior to Advanced Age Group

Examination Classes – B.A.L. Ballet, Tap and Jazz

Stratosphere Performing Arts offers B.A.L. Ballet, Tap and Jazz Syllabus classes for students who wish to focus and perfect their dance technique. These classes follow a formal structure and class work is set by B.A.L. syllabus.

B.A.L.’s Tap, Ballet, and Jazz syllabi have recently undergone extensive revision to ensure teachers and students enjoy a vibrant, up-to-date syllabus.

​

Today B.A.L. is represented in all states of Australia, as well as New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

 

Stratosphere Performing Arts will submit students for examination each year where students are adjudicated on their learned syllabus work. This is a great way to ascertain a student’s progress as well as awarding the credit recognition and accreditation for their learning.
